WHAT'S NUTRITHERAPY?

You all know nutrition and dietetics, perhaps naturopathy, discipline exercised by a naturopath. But do you know nutritional therapy or Nutritherapy?

A very good definition is given in the book written  Linda Lazarides, The principles of nutritional therapy  (1996) :

"A clear distinction needs to be made between nutritherapy itself and self-medication based on nutrition and dietary supplements. Nutritherapy seeks to:

  • Optimize physical and mental health and performance

  • Extend lifetime

  • Preventing and treating diseases through dietary changes, daily or circumstantial supplementation to overcome the limitations of diet and the administration of micronutrients as medicines. "

Nutritherapy should not be seen as a self-medication nutritional although most supplements are sold over-the-counter, their use is to be controlled, it is necessary to avoid misuse which is  at best useless but which can fatigue your organism.

Do not forget that some micronutrients can be taken in excess and cause unwanted and serious symptoms.

The approach of the nutritherapist is to treat the individual as a whole and not the disease itself.

Nutritherapy is also used extensively as a preventive measure.

  • Dietitians-Nutritionists differentiate themselves from nutri therapists in the sense that the use of dietary supplements is not taught as a basic treatment. Because food should bring us everything we need. Not really the case nowdays.

  • Allopathic doctors , prescribe drugs and are hardly involved in prevention.

  • Naturopaths suggest the use of food supplements among others but they also use other techniques, or plants, essential oils, fleur de bach. They therefore practice nutritherapy as a possible axis of treatment but combined with other practices.

All of these professionals use in part nuthritherapy, so if you want to be treated by nutritherapy you can contact a doctor, a dietician or a naturopath who use this technique.
